Hip Pain At Night Was Ruining Her Sleep

The Problem

A lady in her 50s attended the clinic with pain on the outside of her hip that had gradually worsened over several months.

Sleeping on her side had become uncomfortable and she was waking several times during the night because of the pain.

Walking longer distances and climbing stairs were also becoming increasingly difficult.

What We Found

Assessment showed that the pain was not coming from arthritis in the hip joint as she had feared.

Instead, the symptoms were being caused by irritation of the tendons around the hip, a condition commonly seen in women during their 40s and 50s.

Hormonal changes can often play a role in tendon health and recovery.

Treatment

Treatment included:

✔ Education and activity modification

✔ Hands-on physiotherapy

✔ Progressive strengthening exercises

✔ Advice around sleep positions

The Outcome

Within a few sessions, her night pain had significantly improved and she was able to sleep comfortably again.

Walking and daily activities also became much easier.

The Take Home Message

Pain on the outside of the hip isn't always arthritis.

Many women are surprised to learn that tendon-related hip pain is both common and highly treatable with the right approach.
