The Pain Wasn't In THEIR Foot

The Problem

A keen runner came to see me worried that their Great Manchester Run goals were slipping away.

They had been struggling with persistent foot pain for several weeks. Despite resting, reducing his training and trying various self-help strategies, the pain wasn't improving and they were concerned he may have to withdraw from the event altogether.

What We Found

Following a detailed physiotherapy assessment, it became clear that the foot wasn't actually the primary cause of the problem.

The real issue was reduced strength and control around the hip, which was placing excessive strain through the foot during running.

Treatment

Treatment focused on:

✔ Hands-on physiotherapy

✔ Improving hip strength and stability

✔ Correcting movement patterns

✔ A progressive return-to-running programme

The Outcome

The pain gradually settled, confidence returned and they successfully completed the Great Manchester Run.

The Take Home Message

The area that hurts isn't always the area causing the problem.

A thorough assessment can often identify the true source of pain and help you get back to doing the things you enjoy.

If you're struggling with a running injury or recurring pain, physiotherapy may be able to help.
