Struggling With Elbow Pain?
Elbow pain can make simple everyday tasks surprisingly difficult.
Whether you're lifting a kettle, carrying shopping, gripping tools, using a computer mouse or playing sport, elbow pain can quickly become frustrating and affect your quality of life.
At Revive Physio, I regularly assess and treat both Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow.
What Is Tennis Elbow?
Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylalgia) is pain on the outside of the elbow.
Despite its name, most people who develop Tennis Elbow have never picked up a tennis racket.
It commonly affects people who:
✔ Work at a desk
✔ Use a computer mouse frequently
✔ Perform repetitive lifting
✔ Carry children
✔ Do DIY or gardening
✔ Participate in racket sports
Common Symptoms
Pain on the outside of the elbow
Pain gripping objects
Difficulty lifting a kettle
Pain opening jars
Reduced grip strength
Symptoms worse after activity
What Is Golfer's Elbow?
Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylalgia) causes pain on the inside of the elbow.
It often develops due to repetitive gripping, lifting or wrist movements.
Common Symptoms
Pain on the inside of the elbow
Pain gripping objects
Pain lifting weights
Tenderness around the elbow
Reduced strength
Pain during sports or exercise
What Causes Tennis and Golfer's Elbow?
These conditions usually develop when the tendons around the elbow become overloaded.
Common contributing factors include:
Repetitive tasks
Increased gym training
Poor lifting technique
Sudden increases in activity
Desk-based work
Sports participation
Do I need to play tennis to develop tennis elbow?
No. Tennis elbow can be aggravated by gripping, lifting, manual work, computer use, gym exercises and everyday household activities. Other problems can also cause elbow or arm pain, so an assessment is recommended before beginning treatment.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
A detailed assessment helps identify not only the painful area but also the reason symptoms developed.
Treatment may include:
✓ Hands-on physiotherapy
✓ Strengthening exercises
✓ Load management advice
✓ Ergonomic assessment
✓ Postural advice
✓ Shockwave Therapy
✓ Dry needling
✓ Return-to-sport guidance
Can shockwave therapy help tennis elbow?
Shockwave therapy may be considered for selected cases of persistent tennis elbow. It is not suitable for every painful elbow and does not replace progressive strengthening or activity management. A physiotherapy assessment is needed to confirm the likely diagnosis and decide whether shockwave is appropriate.
