Knee Pain

Knee pain stopping you doing the things you enjoy?

Knee pain is extremely common and can affect people of all ages. It may develop following an injury, gradually through changes in activity or training, or as a result of conditions such as osteoarthritis or tendon problems.

At Revive Physio in Mosley Common, the first step is understanding what is causing your knee pain and why so that treatment can be tailored to you.

Common symptoms of knee pain

Knee pain can present in different ways, including:

  • Pain around or behind the kneecap

  • Pain on the inside or outside of the knee

  • Pain with stairs, squatting or kneeling

  • Pain when walking, running or exercising

  • Stiffness after sitting or first getting moving

  • Clicking, grinding or swelling

  • Locking

  • Weakness or a feeling that the knee may give way

What can cause knee pain?

There are many possible causes, which is why getting the right diagnosis is important.

Common conditions include:

Patellofemoral pain – pain around or behind the kneecap, often aggravated by stairs, squatting or prolonged sitting.

Patellar tendinopathy – pain around the tendon below the kneecap, commonly associated with running, jumping and repeated loading.

Knee osteoarthritis – may cause pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced movement.

Meniscus problems – can cause joint-line pain, swelling, clicking or catching.

Ligament injuries – including ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL injuries, often following trauma or sporting injuries.

Lateral knee pain – common in runners and cyclists and may involve structures around the outside of the knee.

Pain around the knee can also sometimes be influenced by the hip, ankle, foot or lower back, so I don't always assess just the painful area.

How can physiotherapy help?

Your physiotherapy assessment looks at your knee alongside factors such as movement, joint mobility, quadriceps and VMO function, hip and gluteal strength, muscle tightness and the activities that aggravate your symptoms.

Treatment may include:

  • Individualised exercise and rehabilitation

  • Quadriceps and lower-limb strengthening

  • Treatment of relevant muscle tightness

  • Manual therapy and joint mobilisation

  • Advice around activity and load management

  • Return-to-running or sport rehabilitation

  • Shockwave therapy for selected persistent tendon problems such as patellar tendinopathy

  • Hyaluronic acid joint injections as a private treatment option for appropriately assessed knee osteoarthritis

The right treatment depends on the cause of your knee pain, rather than simply where it hurts.
