Success Story: From Severe Shoulder Pain to Sleeping Through the Night

The Problem

A client came to Revive Physio with severe shoulder pain that had gradually become so intense it was waking her several times every night. She was exhausted, struggling with everyday tasks and finding even simple movements painful.

Like many people, she had hoped the symptoms would settle on their own, but instead they continued to worsen.

What We Found

Following a detailed physiotherapy assessment, it became clear that the problem wasn't just the shoulder itself.

Restricted movement within the shoulder (glenohumeral) joint, stiffness through the neck (cervical spine) and upper thoracic spine, poor postural control, weakness of the rotator cuff muscles and reduced scapular stability were all contributing to her pain.

Rather than simply treating the painful area, it was important to understand why the shoulder had become overloaded.

The Treatment

Treatment was tailored specifically to her symptoms and goals and included:

✔ Postural education and advice to reduce unnecessary strain on the shoulder.

✔ Manual therapy and joint mobilisation to the cervical spine, upper thoracic spine and glenohumeral joint to restore normal movement.

✔ Progressive rotator cuff strengthening exercises.

✔ Scapular stabilisation exercises to improve shoulder mechanics.

✔ K-Taping to provide additional support and help reduce pain between appointments.

Throughout treatment, education played an important role so she understood both the cause of her symptoms and how to manage them confidently.

The Outcome

She noticed an improvement after her very first treatment session.

Over the following weeks, her shoulder pain steadily reduced, her movement improved and, most importantly, she was finally able to sleep through the night again.

She returned to her normal daily activities with significantly less pain and much greater confidence in her shoulder.

The Take Home Message

Shoulder pain is rarely caused by one structure alone.

Often, the neck, upper back, posture, muscle strength and movement patterns all contribute to ongoing symptoms.

A detailed physiotherapy assessment helps identify the root cause rather than simply treating where it hurts.

If you've been struggling with shoulder pain, neck pain or pain that's disturbing your sleep, you don't have to simply put up with it. The right assessment and treatment plan can make a significant difference.
