Vertigo & Neck Pain Success Story

The Problem

A client came to Revive Physio after experiencing episodes of vertigo, dizziness and persistent neck pain for several years.

Their symptoms had started suddenly, resulting in a collapse at work and admission to hospital. Fortunately, serious causes, including a stroke, had been ruled out following medical investigations.

Although the severe episodes became less frequent over time, they continued to experience ongoing neck pain and stiffness, particularly through the left side of the neck and shoulder. As the pain and tension increased, the dizziness would often follow.

Simple activities such as travelling on trains, flying and prolonged desk work became a source of anxiety, with the constant worry that another episode of vertigo might occur.

What We Found

Following a detailed physiotherapy assessment, it became clear that the symptoms were closely linked to reduced movement through the cervical spine, stiffness within the upper thoracic spine and significant muscle tension around the neck and left shoulder.

Poor postural control, restricted joint mobility and weakness of the deep neck stabilising muscles were contributing to ongoing irritation and symptoms.

Rather than treating the dizziness alone, it was important to address the underlying mechanical problems contributing to the episodes.

The Treatment

A personalised physiotherapy programme was developed, focusing on restoring normal movement, reducing muscle tension and improving neck function.

Treatment included:

✔ Postural education and ergonomic advice for desk-based work

✔ Hands-on manual therapy and mobilisation of the cervical spine and upper thoracic spine

✔ Soft tissue massage and myofascial release to reduce muscle tension

✔ Gentle exercises to restore neck mobility

✔ Deep neck stabilisation and strengthening exercises

✔ A progressive home rehabilitation programme

Throughout treatment, advice was also provided on activity modification and strategies to help reduce symptom flare-ups.

The Outcome

As treatment progressed, neck pain gradually reduced, movement returned to normal and muscle tension significantly improved.

Most importantly, the episodes of vertigo and dizziness completely resolved throughout the course of treatment.

The client regained confidence in everyday activities and no longer lived with the constant fear of another episode affecting work, travel or daily life.

The Take Home Message

Vertigo and dizziness aren't always caused by problems within the inner ear.

For some people, restricted movement, muscle tension and dysfunction within the neck can contribute to symptoms, often referred to as cervicogenic dizziness.

A detailed physiotherapy assessment can help determine whether the neck is playing a role in your symptoms and guide the most appropriate treatment.
